BASIC FUNCTION

Establishes and provides leadership for the Office of Workforce, Community, and Economic Development at the Vermont State University (VTSU). Directly reporting to the President, this individual will work closely with the Vermont State Colleges System (VSCS) Executive Director of Workforce Development, the VTSU Provost, College Deans, Department Chairs and faculty, VP of Admissions and Enrollment Marketing, and VP of Student Success to coordinate all workforce, community, and business development activities. Will bring all existing programs related to Continuing Education, K-12, workforce, community, economic development, and business and industry partnerships on all the university campuses under a single umbrella for better coordination across all campuses, efficiency, cost effectiveness, compliance, and accountability. Supports VTSU mission to become a national model for preparing career-ready students to meet the needs of the state, region, and country and to serve as workforce and economic development engine in communities across the state.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, coordinate, and supervise all new workforce, community, economic, and business development programs and initiatives for the university.
  • Build mutually beneficial and sustainable partnerships and coalitions with community organizations, regional development corporations, and businesses in the state and beyond.
  • Create professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and community partners for engaging in mutually beneficial community-engaged research, scholarship, and creative activities, and learning in which everyone is an equal partner in the generation of new knowledge and ideas.
  • Work with faculty across all disciplines and business, industry, and community partners to develop and embed industry relevant micro-credentials and community-engaged scholarship and learning content in courses and build community-engaged research and creative activities projects that address local needs.
  • Work with faculty across all disciplines to develop undergraduates as engaged scholars through research, study away and study abroad experiences.
  • Work with community and governmental organizations, industry, and businesses to create internships, service-learning opportunities, and apprenticeships for students.
  • Seek grant funding to build innovative workforce, economic, and community development initiatives.
  • Prepare VTSU for the Carnegie Community Engaged designation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision and direction are received from the president.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervision of directors of Advanced Manufacturing Center; Vermont Manufacturing Extension Center; Small Business Development Center; Center for Schools; Learning and Working Community Initiative; Center for Professional Studies; and Continuing Education & Workforce Development, and other K-12 and related offices/centers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five (5) or more years of relevant progressive leadership in higher education, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Current, valid, driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • Willingness to travel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Business or related field.
  • Ten (10) or more years of relevant progressive leadership in higher education or other complex organization with evidence of work related to workforce, community and business development.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of trends, issues, and accepted practices relevant to the position.
  • Expertise in using data, analytics and emerging technologies to identify barriers to student success and develop systemic changes and programs that promote better, more equitable outcomes for all traditional and non-traditional students.
  • Knowledge of complex regulatory statutes related to higher education government grants.
  • Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University.
  • Commitment to developing own professional knowledge and the professional knowledge of team members regarding diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice and how it informs practices within area of expertise.

Location: This position may be based on any of the Vermont State University's campuses; hybrid remote work is feasible
