Christmas dinner is so much more than your average Sunday roast, so this year choose the best beef joints supermarkets and butchers have on offer! Our favourites included a boneless rib smothered in a sticky honey, mustard and horseradish glaze, joints covered in a treacle glaze, and a dry aged rib of beef. We tasted 22 to find our favourite one, here's why Aldi is the place to shop for your roast this Christmas.

1 Winner: Aldi Specially Selected Bone in Rib of Beef Joint with Salt & Pepper

Overall Score: 85/100

A feast for the eyes, this juicy cut of beef is meaty and seasoned with salt and pepper for an indulgent look and a deep flavour profile. It's juicy, with a quality taste to the beef. Testers loved the flaky almost brisket-like texture. Tender, fatty strands run throughout the meat, giving the otherwise succulent and lean beef a melt-in-the-mouth feel.

2 Joint runner-up: The Ginger Pig Cote de Boeuf

Overall Score: 82/100

Meaty and lean with a golden-crackled fat cap. The beef has a naturally rich savoury aroma with a hint of the salt and pepper sneaking through to complement the crisp crackling scent. The meat is tender with a great bite, but has a slight fattiness which some disliked. It's flavoursome, and our testers enjoyed the deep umami taste.

3 Joint runner-up: Marks & Spencer Collection Dry Aged Rib of Beef

Overall Score: 82/100

Decadently smothered in smoked béarnaise butter sauce. This cut of beef has a sweet and slightly fruited aroma with a savouriness from the mustard, cracked black pepper and parsley. Though a little bland, the juicy and succulent meat is enlivened by the sweet, lemony citric notes from the sauce.

4 Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Boneless Beef Rib Topped with a sticky honey, mustard and horseradish glaze with spicy mustard seed and herb crumb

Overall Score: 81/100

Testers were drawn in by the sweet roasted garlic scent, which paired with the rosemary for a sweet and savoury aroma. We couldn't get enough of the well-rounded herb and onion taste coming from the mustard seed crumb. It was made sweeter by the sticky honey, mustard and horseradish glaze. Though tender and juicy, the herb crust chars a little too easily and makes it look like the beef is overcooked.

5 Eversfield Organic Beef Rib on Bone

Overall Score: 78/100

Despite its well-browned appearance and slightly dry edges, this joint of beef is tender, falling of the bone effortlessly. It's dry aged on the bone for a minimum of 28 days, which adds an indulgent mature taste to the meat. It's also naturally sweet with a slight smoky aftertaste, and well-seasoned with a balanced hit of salt and pepper.

6 Asda Extra Special 28 Day Matured Beef Rump Joint with a Portobello, Porcini & Truffle Duxelle

Overall Score: 77/100

This 30-day matured rump roast is stuffed with a mushroom & truffle duxelle held together by crispy oak smoked dry cured bacon and finished off with two bay leaves. The mushrooms and truffle give it a layered and complex earthy aroma. It works well with the bacon's smokiness. Rich in umami, we enjoyed the flavour and the slight booziness from the brandy. The roast is well-seasoned. Testers picked out pepper, garlic and onion, however, some said there was too much going on on the palate.

7 Booths Beef Chateaubriand

Overall score: £77.00

Oozing with garlic and herb butter, we found that the parsley and white pepper give the meat a delicious herbaceous depth and go well with the punchy garlic aroma. As expected, the joint had a roasted garlic butter taste. The beef itself is quite bland and has pockets of dryness amongst the overall succulent texture.

8 Tesco British Beef Rib with Mustard

Overall Score: 77/100

Gorgeous crackling surrounds a dark cut of meat that looks juicy. Beef dripping in the mustard basting fat adds a meaty aroma to the joint. Fresh tasting with sweet-tangy mustard undertones, we loved the slight fatty richness but wished the beef itself had a deeper flavour. Despite having moreishly crisp crackling the meat is quite dry.

9 The Ginger Pig Forerib of Beef

Overall Score: 77/100

With an appealing golden crunch, the crackling on this joint of beef has the perfect snap. Testers liked how juicy the cut of beef looks. We were impressed with its deep, meaty, umami scent. It you're a fan of plenty of fat with your crackling, this joint is perfect for you. However, some found it a bit greasy. The meat cuts well and is lovely and tender with slight areas of dryness.

10 Kettyle 28 Day Dry Aged Sirloin Joint

Overall Score: 75/100

It looks impressively golden, and juicy towards the centre. However, the surrounding meat is a bit dry. The crunchy crackling packs an aromatic punch. Its fattiness enhances the light meaty scent. The sirloin has a wonderful, savoury fatty taste backed up by a smoky roasted flavour from the crackling.
